Now I told you that we're looking at PTE listening, we're going to focus on a specific pt e listening task today. And that is right from dictation. If you don't know what that is, don't worry, I'm going to explain it to now we're going to practice spelling, which is a very important part of this task, and finding mistakes in sentences.
And then we will practice some real right from dictation prompts using all of the tips and advice that we've looked at in the class. So first, let's just remind ourselves of the PTE listening test. There are eight parts. It lasts between 45 and 57 minutes. And you can see here the names of all of the tasks. But the one we're going to focus on today is part eight, which is right from dictation. So let's think a little about what this task is. I have some questions here. And I'd like you to see if you know any of the answers to these questions. If you do, please write them into the comments. If you don't, that's fine, you can always guess. So we have what is the task? Meaning? What do you have to do? How is it scored? How do you get points for this task? How long do you have? So how many minutes for each task? And how many of the prompts do you have to complete? So I'm gonna give you a few minutes to a few minutes, a few moments to think and then see if you can write any of these answers in the comments. It's fine to guess if you're not sure. Okay,so maybe everyone watching here is a first time PTE taker, and that's absolutely fine. That's why you come to the class to learn about these things. So let's have a look now at the answers to these questions. Okay, so your response for right from dictation test your ability to understand and remember a sentence you hear, and then write it exactly as you hear it using the correct spelling. So you will hear a sentence, you'll only hear it once, and you need to write exactly what you hear. And it is testing your ability to understand and remember that sentence and also write it with correct spelling and grammar, of course. So how is it scored? This is scored for content. Now does your response include all the words in the sentence and only these words, so content is scored by counting the number of correct words in your response.
So any incorrect words, you will not receive a point. If all the words are right, and they're spelled correctly, you receive the maximum score for this question type. If one or more words incorrect, you will get partial scoring. So it can depend if you've got some of the sentence right, you will still receive some marks, but not full marks. So you want to get this as accurate as possible. How long do you have the recording is three to five seconds long. It's a single sentence, and you will have 30 to 60 seconds to check and edit your sentence. So you actually have quite a long time after hearing the sentence to check it. Now we're going to look at a technique that you need to use in order to do this. And there will be three to four prompts. So maybe you'll have three maybe you'll have four it depends on your test. So that's a task overview for PTE right from dictation. Now let's look at the method. There are a few things you need to do we have before listening during listening and after listening. Before listening. You have seven seconds before the recording begins. Now this is time that you can use to prepare. You should calm yourself and focus so before All the listening starts, make sure you feel calm and you're ready, you're focused, and you're ready to begin writing. So either on the erasable notepad that you'll have on the computer, or directly onto the screen.
So now that we're prepared, we're ready to listen, the audio starts, what should we do? During the recording, you need to write down all the content words within the sentence. This is the most important thing content words. Don't worry about minor words, such as articles or prepositions, because you can insert these afterwards based on your grammatical knowledge. So as you listen write down nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, the words that hold the most content, meaning, once you've finished, you can add in prepositions, articles, that kind of thing. So don't worry about writing those. And it's really important that you try to focus on the meaning of the sentence. Don't worry about spelling at this stage. If you hear a word and you don't know how to spell it, just write it so that you will understand what the word is. We worry about spelling afterwards. So this is during listening, we're really aiming to write down everything that we hear. And try to write as fast as you can, of course, do not stop to check anything. Now, after listening, this is where your preparation really comes into play. So you'll write your sentence on the screen or complete your sentence on the screen. Review it for grammar, word form, word order, and add in any words you left out. So any of those articles or prepositions the small words, you can add those in now using your grammatical knowledge to help you double check the spelling of every word. Okay, so including word endings and plural words. So make sure the spelling of every single word is checked. And remember that marks are awarded for every correct word spelt correctly. So the work must be correct, the spelling must be correct.
So this is really the time that you have to check your spelling, check your grammar, make sure that the sentence makes sense. So I've talked a little bit about spelling this is really important for right from dictation because it can cause you to lose a mark if you spell a word incorrectly. For that reason, in your preparation, it's really important that you practice spelling, it might seem like it's not a good use of time, but I promise you it is. So to demonstrate that we are going to do a mini spelling test together. I will read a word. I'd like you to write it in the chat or in the comments. So listen to the word that I say. Write it in the comments. Everybody ready? Okay. The first word is indictment. indictment. So how do you spell indictment? And you write it in the comments. Don't use a dictionary that's cheating. indictment. If you don't know it's fine to guess I will show you the correct spelling in a minute. The first word in our spelling test is indictment. Okay, very good. I already have an answer for Maria. Well done, Maria. Excellent. I will be revealing the correct spelling in just a moment. indictment. Well done. Lots of people coming through well done. I can see lots of correct spellings coming through that is excellent. Okay. We have the answer indictment and this is a difficult word because it has a very strange spelling in there. So well then everybody. The next word is dilate. dilate. How do you spell dilate? Okay, give another moment dilate. Good. Lots of answers coming through. Yeah. And again, we have all correct answers. Let me show you. Well done dilate. Okay. All right. Maybe that one was too easy. Let me give you a more difficult one. The next word is ingenious. Ingenious. How do you spell ingenious. Wow. I can't believe how many how many comments we're getting through. This is great. Well done, everybody. Next word, ingenious.
Okay, Very good. Thank you Marilyn. can see the first answer coming through. Well done. Vincent. Orland Excellent. Well done. We've got Sheila All spelling in genius correctly. Well done. Okay, the next word is minuscule how do we spell miniscule? Okay, well done everybody who's contributing have got unis call me Maria Diana. Marilyn, and anyone else who I haven't mentioned Thank you. Okay yeah minuscule is a little bit tricky with those and letters but well done. Yes, here is the answer. So well done. Vincent Ceci call me Antonio. You all got that? Correct. minuscule? Well done. Okay, now the next one is a word that I always get wrong. Accommodate. How do you spell accommodate? How many C's and M's? That's what I always get wrong in this word. Accommodate. All right. Wow. I can see two correct answers. Three correct answers. Four Correct. Oh, I think we've got one that missed an M. Yeah. So this one is tricky, because it has some double letters. We have double C and double M. Accommodate well done. Excellent. If you got that correct. You are better spelling better speller than I am. Okay, we have one more word for you today. The final word in our spelling test is conscientious. Conscientious. How do you spell conscientious?
How do you spell on Shi anxious? Writes lots of answers already coming through and I can see correct answers. They're well done. Excellent. Yet well done. Kirsten Vincent Maria, Marilyn Ceci, you all got that? Correct. We spell accommodate, oh, I'm sorry. Conscientious, like this. Okay, I'm very impressed with everyone's spelling. That's excellent. Now, it is good to do spelling tests like this with words that might have different spellings for how they sound. And that is so that you can get used to it as well get used to hearing a word and writing it down. So even if you got all of those correct, I would still encourage you to give yourself a spelling test regularly, as it's really good practice for this PTE listening task. Well done, everybody. And thank you so much for all of your comment. Now let's move on. We're going to practice finding mistakes in sentences because of course, when you've finished listening and you're looking at your sentence, you need to be able to see your mistakes and correct them. So this is a great way to practice. Here's our first sentence can you please find the mistake and write the correct either sentence or word into the chat? So I'll give you a clue with this sentence. We actually have two mistakes. There are two mistakes in the sentence can you find and correct them? Good I can see that Vincent and Merlin have spotted one of the mistakes well done. Can you spot the other mistake? It's not quite so obvious, I'm afraid. Yeah. So we've got lots of people. Good correcting that second mistake. All right. Now I'm, I'm going to show you the answer in just a minute. But let's do the rest of them first. So this is the server. This is the second one. It's a longer a longer sentence. Can you find the mistakes in here there are again two mistakes in this sentence.
Okay. Let's give everyone a moment to find it because this sentence is a little bit longer. Okay. And don't worry, I will show you the answers. Okay. I'll give you a clue with this one. We have a mistake with a preposition. And we have a missing article. Yeah, good. Well done. Liesl. You spotted the preposition mistake. And Vincent, you spotted the missing article. Well done everybody. Okay, next one. So we have few mistakes here. few mistakes in this sentence. We have a mistake with a plural noun. A verb tense or verb ending, and a pronoun. I'll give everyone a moment to have a look at that and find those mistakes. Yeah, well done. Good. Joan. I can see that you've spotted the mistake with the pronoun well done. Yeah, Vincent, you found all the mistakes. Nice work. Great. Well done. Mark. Very good. Okay, excellent. Now, let me show you the next one. So this one only has one mistake. Just one mistake in this sentence. Can you identify that mistake? Okay, yeah, well done. Lots of correct answers coming for number three. Well done. How about number four? Just one word, that's incorrect. And number four that we need to find. Okay, well done. Mark. Nice. Good. Excellent. Hey, now let me just check. I think there is one more sentence. Yes. One more sentence. And that word that my video is slightly up. There we go. It's brand new. Thank you. So that's the final sentence for you. And again, only one mistake. One mistake in sentence five. Yeah, no, don't worry. Vinson, you got the other ones? Correct. Yeah, well done. Some people have noticed that mistake in number five as well. Okay, well, now let's go through the answers and see how you got on with identifying those mistakes.
So number one are two mistakes. I think lots of people got that life was incorrect. It should have been live. But also broadcast in the sentence it said broadcasted, which is not the correct past tense of this verb. Broadcast is an irregular verb and it doesn't change in the simple past. Just like these verbs, for example, that bat set puts cut and shut, they stay the same in past simple and past participles. So broadcast is correct. broadcasted was wrong. Well done if you got that sentence to. Yes. So we have here on my behalf. That was the preposition it said. It said in my behalf but we say speak on someone's behalf. And also if you spotted the missing article was the event because in the sentence before it just said event, we need an article with that Noun. The event on my behalf the event well done if you got those correct. And number three, we had students so we needed to make it plural because we have five, five of the students plural, failed. So we need to put that in the past tense because we're talking about last Friday needs to be in the past. So we need that IDI ending on failed and their assignments. We need the possessive pronoun, not the subject pronoun they. So well done if you got all three of those corrections in that sentence. You Now let's look at the final two. It says number six, it's actually number four. It was a frustrating situation because we were incapable of helping. So the opposite to capable is not uncapable. It's incapable, well done if you got that correct. And number five, not number seven, I've accepted. So yeah, we had the incorrect word usage, so the writer needed to use accepted instead of accepted.
So well done, I can see that a few people got that correct. So excellent. If you are able to identify errors in sentences, it will make you much more likely to spot your mistakes. When you do the PTE listening exam, the right from dictation task. If you can spot your mistakes, you're more likely to get full marks. So it's a great thing to practice for this task. Now let's look at some final tips before we do some real practice. Have your cursor so this thing your mouse positioned in the box and be ready to type when the recording begins. Type as you listen and remember, do not stop to make a correction, you have plenty of time to do that. After the audio. You can review and correct any typing errors or mistakes at the end. Keywords and content words are the most important to take note of while you're listening because you won't be able to make those up when you finished. But prepositions and articles you should be able to add those in yourself. You can revisit and include any of those auxiliary words at the end. Make sure you check things so when you're checking at the end, check your subject verb agreement, check tenses, punctuation, look out for things like that when you're editing. Use your knowledge of grammar to help you place the words correctly in the sentence. So it doesn't matter if you can't remember exactly how they were. If you have good knowledge of grammar, you should be able to do this afterwards. Spelling is very important. So you will lose a score or a point for incorrect spelling, the flow of the sentence is important to you'll be able to fix spelling at the end. So don't worry about your mistakes while you're listening. So I think we've gone over that strategy in quite a lot of detail.
Now is the time to practice a real mini PTE right from dictation test. I'm going to read a sentence, everyone please write it in the comment. Use the strategies that we've looked at. When you hear me read the sentence, write it out and then spend some time checking your spelling and grammar. I will only read the sentence one because I want to make this like a real mock test. So you'll only hear it once. Are you ready? Then number one technological advancement has seen the world almost entirely change in just a decade. Okay, so type your sentence into the chat everybody as best you can. That was quite a long sentence. Let's see how everybody got on. If you were only able to get some of the content words, that's fine. I would love to see what you wrote. And just check, check your spelling, focus on your spelling. Okay, thanks, Mark. That's a great effort. So you did get quite a lot of those content words you are missing a few words and advance advances the verb we need the noun form that you're able to edit that with the noun form of advance. But that's a really good effort and well done. Anyone else wants to try a thank you or learned? Yeah, so you've got, you've got the beginning and you've got the end perfectly well done. Just missing some things in the middle. But don't worry. It was a long sentence. I did start with the most difficult sentence everybody they get a bit easier after this one. Okay, well, good. Yeah. So lots of people got the beginning and the end of the sentence. So let's have a look and see the full sentence. Technical logical advancement has seen the world almost entirely change in just a decade. Good so has seen a few people wrote seem so interesting there but that is where your knowledge of grammar should come in there and help you to edit it has seen the world good well done for your efforts everyone, let's try another one be ready to hear it you'll only hear at once. Okay entries on behalf of another university will not be allowed have a go at that so I won't read it a second time because I think it's important to make it as close to a real PTE listening test as we can. Okay, give everyone just another moment well done. Thank you sissy.
Good. Okay, so we're getting the kind of just Okay, right. Yeah. So, a lot of people got a lot of the words let's have a look at the exact sentence. entries on behalf of another university will not be allowed. Now I saw a few people wrote another universities floral. Now this is where you need to use your grammatical knowledge to think can we say another universities? Actually no. Another we can only use with a singular noun. If it was University's plural, the word would be other, not another. So when you're going through and checking your sentence, that's the type of thing that you'll need to check for singular versus plural. But good well done if you got most of those content words, correct. That was excellent. Okay, mock prompt number three coming up. Here we go. The Golden Age of Hollywood began with the silent movie era. Let's see how everyone gets on with this one. Have a moment to think okay. Remember when you're checking think about your grammar and your spelling. Good. Okay. Yeah, this isn't bad at all. Everybody. Lots of people are getting the main content words. You just need to make sure that you read your sentence again and think does this make sense? Yeah. And also how do we spell began? How do we spell that word? You just need to check their spelling. Let me show you. The sir. The Golden Age of Hollywood began with the silent movie era. I saw a few people wrote begun with a You be careful. That's the past participle. But we're using the past simple form of the verb with an A began with the silent movie era, everyone got era and the Golden Age of Hollywood. So well done. Yes. So you just really need to check your form of that verb began. Okay, next one. We've got two more prompts left. This is number four. Everyone ready? Applicants must hand in their documents by Friday. Okay, this is a nice short sentence for everybody. Okay.
So when you are checking make sure you check your spelling, check your verb forms subject verb agreements, plural nouns. That first word was should it be singular or plural? Well done. Yeah. Good. A few people missing that important preposition so hand in. We have a phrasal verb there. So make sure you've got that preposition and in the documents by Friday Well done. Great, everybody. So many people making a really good effort with this. Yeah, well done Jack. I can see correct answer a show. Well done. Liesl. Very, very good. Nice work, everybody. Yeah, maybe we should have started with the shorter ones. Now we have one more sentence left for you. And here it is everybody ready? Okay. Some young people encounter anxiety on a daily basis. That was our final sentence. Once again, check spelling check verb forms. Check that it makes sense that you've got the right prepositions, the right articles, all the auxiliary words, your plural nouns. Well done yeah, good. Liesl, have really good, everybody what we got better towards the end, everyone's getting all correct. Let's show you the answers. Some young people encounter anxiety on a daily basis. Amazing work, everybody. If you got that correct, well done. So as you can see, this task is a little bit more difficult than sounds, because you only hear it once, and you have to be focused. But you also need to have a good strategy for checking your grammar at the end. So a good knowledge of grammar and spelling is very important for this task. So let's just review the main points of what we've talked about, you should stay calm, and be prepared to start writing as soon as the audio starts, because you will only hear it once. Right as you listen, not after.
And don't stop, and then go back and check the spelling and errors at the end. So these are the three very important tips to remember. I would love to hear from everyone. How did you find that today? How was that task? Was it easy? Difficult? Medium, more or less? Okay, which specific parts of that task? Did you find more challenging? Was it the spelling? Was it the grammar? Or was it just staying focused? What was the challenging thing for you? And which strategy did you find useful? So let me know in the comments how you felt about doing that task today? Because I would love to hear how we got on. I saw so many people contributing in the chat. Thank you so much for writing your answers. That's great. So don't delay, make sure that you have the support you need in order to pass your English exam. And maybe I'll see you in a swoosh class very soon. But now let's get started with today's class.
